Wherever you are in the world, you can now gain qualifications from a centre of academic and clinical excellence
Welcome to the online programme in palliative care education delivered from Cardiff University in the UK.
This internationally renowned programme has been successfully operating since 1989. It has evolved from the original Diploma in Palliative Medicine that was provided by the former University of Wales College of Medicine in Cardiff. In 2004, UWCM merged with Cardiff University.
The currently available programmes lead to postgraduate qualifications in Palliative Medicine and Palliative Care. They have been specifically designed for the varying needs of busy practitioners working in differing clinical settings across the globe. In recognition of paediatric palliative medicine becoming a sub-specialty, paediatric palliative care is now fully integrated throughout the diploma course. The course is able to offer a brief overview of paediatric palliative care for generalists with an interest or more in depth study for those who specialise in paediatric palliative care.
There are 2 pathways available:
The Postgraduate Diploma/MSc in Palliative Medicine (open to doctors)
The Postgraduate Diploma/MSc in Palliative Care (open to non-medical healthcare professionals).
The 2 pathways overlap in many ways. The residential teaching for both diplomas is held as a multidisciplinary event and many of the modules are available to all students. Residential teaching is always held in Cardiff and is also held in India if there is sufficient demand.

There will also be the opportunity for healthcare professionals in New Zealand to attend 3 days of ‘face- to-face’ teaching as a stand alone Short Course in Palliative Medicine / Palliative Care. This Short Course carries 15 transferable credits and completes much of the residential teaching block of the Postgraduate Diploma.
The Postgraduate Diploma is structured over 2 years leading to a postgraduate qualification in its own right, or contributes academic credits towards the award of the MSc. The MSc qualification is gained through successful completion of a dissertation which is undertaken over 2 years.
