Palliative Care Education

Entry requirements

For admission to this postgraduate programme at Cardiff University you should:

. Be a graduate in medicine or an allied profession, or a qualified nurse (RGN or equivalent) and
. Hold appropriate professional registration and
. Work with some patients with palliative care needs (this can be a minor part of your workload).

You are required to be a registered student of the University for each academic year of attendance on the programme.

Although no previous specific training or experience in hospice care is necessary, some of the assignments and projects will require you to draw upon your experience with palliative care patients.

English Language Requirements

If your first language is not English you will be asked to provide proof of your proficiency in the English language before you can be admitted to the programme.

You should demonstrate an acceptable standard of academic English. Assessments are normally conducted through the English language.

The usual University requirement for English for overseas postgraduate students is either a level of 6.5 in IELTS, or 570 in TOEFL, but the Course Director may at his or her discretion accept an alternative assessment. For example, if you have evidence that you have successfully completed a first or subsequent degree entirely in the medium of English, for a minimum of one year.

Accreditation of Prior Learning

We have a procedure to accredit prior learning (APL) gained from other educational institutions, but we do not presently recognise experiential learning. If you believe that you have completed a recognised programme of learning equivalent to one or more modules of the Diploma and wish to apply for an APL exemption, please contact us prior to your application. There will be a cost incurred for the APL process.

What information technology (IT) equipment and skills do I need to undertake the e-learning course?

The course assesses and the tutors are marking your palliative care knowledge NOT your IT skills, so please do not let any of the following information put you off, it is merely to be used as a guide. Click here to access the guide.
